In the 10th episode of the 2nd season, when Jax transferred for Nomad, he removed all of his patches except the Men of Mayhem. If the Redwood Original was given to the ones that prospected in the Mother Charter, shouldn't he had kept those one?

Happy had a redwood patch but not an original patch, and so did Quinn, Montez, and West from what I remember. I'm pretty sure Kozik didn't have an original patch either. (I may be wrong)
It might be a contiuity error, too.
Happy, Quinn, Montez and West received the orignal patch as well.
As far as I understand, Samcro (Redwood Original) was the first Sons of Anarchy charter. Created by John Teller, Piney Winston, Clay Morrow, Lenny Janowitz and additional founding members (Therefore classed as the "Original" charter), The phrase "Redwood" was adopted due to the enormous Redwood trees that grew in the county. Any member that patches in to Samcro, are presented with the Redwood Original Patches. Even T O (Grim Bastards) received these on his cut during the season 7 finale. Like previous comments state, the Nomad charter is a completely seperate charter in its own right, the same as Samcro, Samtaz, Sambel etc. Therefore, when Jax decided to go "Nomad" he no longer classed himself as "Samcro" and in doing so, removed all patches related to that charter. The "Men of Mayhem" patch is a generic patch awarded to a club member when they have gone above and beyond for the club, regardless of what charter they are currently allied with. Hope this helps :-)
That part of San Joaquin county is not known for redwoods. Most of the redwoods are a few hours north-west of that area. And there are certainly no redwoods where they were filming (Tujunga).
saying that they get the original patch from prospecting the mother charter is not true. happy west montez and quinn all got the original patch after transferring from other charters. kozik transferred aswell but did not get an original patch. also, miles prospected samcro and did not get the original patch. there's really no way of telling how you get the patch.
The Redwood patch is given to members who patch into SAMCRO, whether from prospecting for them, transferred from another charter, or patched over from another MC. The Original patch is earned by members who have proven themselves to be unequivocally trustworthy. Filthy Phil, Happy, Quinn, West, Montez, and Ratboy all earned their Original patch at one point or another. T.O. Cross also wore the Redwood Original patches when he patched over at the end of the series, and I believe Jax and the rest of the club felt T.O. had earned the right to wear both patches right away without a prospecting period through the Grim Bastards' 20+ years of brotherhood with SAMCRO.
There are a lot of holes in these explanations. You're all right but not completely. The Redwood Original patches are awarded to anyone who is originally a member of the Redwood Charter. If you revisit the series, Happy tells Clay that he has concerns for his mother's health and would like to transfer to SAMCRO from SAMTAC. Clay replies "it's good to have you back" implying that at some point he was a SAMCRO member prior to what we see. When you look at Phil and Ratboy, they're awarded original patches whereas a few of the transfers do not.
