For the television series, see Mayans MC.

The Mayans Motorcycle Club, also known as the Mayan Nation, controls northern California and all of Nevada, beside Las Vegas on the FX original series Sons of Anarchy. Making their debut in the series' premiere episode, "Pilot", in season one, the founders of the club are Marcus Alvarez and Diaz, both are former Presidente's of the club's mother charter, Oakland. All of their members seem to be Hispanic, most likely Mexican. Throughout the early 2010s, they ran two heroin factories near Oakland and are also involved in prostitution. Playing a recurring role throughout all seasons, they were last seen in the series' finale episode, "Papa's Goods", in season seven.

The club appears again on the FX original series Mayans MC, a spinoff of the FX original series Sons of Anarchy. The activities of the club and their members are the basis of the show. Particularly the Santo Padre charter, a fictional Californian town.

History[]

The Mayan MC's insignia is a Mayan tribal symbol, and their colors are green and khaki. Their kuttes bear the phrase "Los Asesinos de Dios" which in English translates to "Assassins of God". The club eventually became active in drug trade; due to their relationship with the Galindo Cartel. They were formed in 1982 as a result of being denied membership into the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club.

Sons of Anarchy[]

Season 1[]

At the beginning of Season 1, the Mayans stole guns from the Sons of Anarchy's weapon storage and burned down the warehouse, prompting a turf war over the right to rule the San Joaquin Valley. They planned to use these guns to hijack a One-Niners heroin shipment, however, the Sons located the guns in an industrial storage warehouse in San Leandro, called Marcalva, and retaliated by stealing the guns back and destroying the building, as well as killing three Mayans members in the process. The Mayans then allied themselves with the Nordics in an attempt to break the Sons of Anarchy's iron-fisted control over the town of Charming, as the SOA supply their competition with weapons. They also provided muscle for the Nords' drug pushing in exchange for 20% of the profit. The affiliation was ended, however, when they tried to kill Nord leader Ernest Darby. The Mayans and SOA eventually made a deal in order to stop a war; every SOA-Mayan dispute club-wide would end in the Sons' favor, and the SOA would begin selling the Mayans weapons. However, when both gangs met in Oakland to make a deal, the One-Niners attacked and killed a number of Mayans.

Season 2[]

In Season 2, the Mayans aligned themselves with the League of American Nationalists, receiving weapons that were originally meant for SAMCRO and using them to push in on One-Niner and Chinese turf. Marcus Álvarez has used his new strength to declare war on all members of the Sons of Anarchy everywhere. Later on in Season 2, the Mayans become involved with Ethan Zobelle and L.O.A.N. Initially, Zobelle provides guns to the Mayans free of charge. Later, Zobelle partners up with the Mayans to get in on the Mayans' prison heroin trade, the Mayans protect Zobelle from SAMCRO.

Season 3[]

In Season 3, Alvarez orders Mayan puppet club, the Calaveras to provide extra muscle during drug shipments and to perform a drive-by during the wake of slain SOA member Half-Sack. Alvarez, promised to patch-over the Calaveras. However, they prove themselves to be incompentant after SAMCRO steals the heroin to broker a deal with the Mayans.

Season 4[]

By Season 4 SAMCRO and the Mayans have become loose allies. Alvarez made sure the Sons had protection from the Russian Mafia in Stockton State Prison. While in the showers, Mayans and other Hispanic inmates jumped and shived five Russians to death, while leaving Ivo Alexei alive to be killed by imprisoned SAMCRO member Otto Delaney. Eventually, Alvarez introduced them to the Galindo Cartel, their long-time drug supplier. Clay Morrow and Alvarez made a deal with Romeo Parada for SAMCRO to sell them high-powered weapons and mule their cocaine, while the Mayans handle distribution.

Season 5[]

In Season 5, the Mayans had a decreased role. Several Mayans were present at the funeral of Opie Winston, including Marcus Alvarez. Later, Alvarez reached an agreement with the One-Niners, Lin Triad, and the Sons of Anarchy to establish new boundaries of their criminal operations in order to strike a deal with Damon Pope. The Mayans later assisted the Sons of Anarchy and the Byz Lats in a raid on an illegal dog-fighting ring run by the 222s.

Season 6[]

In Season 6, the Mayans had concluded their cocaine business with the Galindo Cartel, and thus grew more reliant on heroin distribution in Oakland once again. When Jax Teller had handed over the True IRA weapons distribution to August Marks, giving the One-Niners a greater increase of power, Marcus Alvarez predicted that war was coming with the boundaries implemented under Damon Pope endangered. After SAMCRO's killing of Bohai Lin, the Mayans had allied with the Lin Triads against the Sons and One-Niners. Alvarez reached out to an old affiliate of his, Byz Lats leader and SAMCRO-friendly Nero Padilla, to warn Nero of the possible war and urged him to ally with the Mayans, as the war would be "black and white versus brown and yellow." Alvarez met with Jax Teller in order to clarify the situation with the IRA and August Marks, and informed Teller that the Mayans would be establishing a new charter in Stockton, knowing the Sons had business there. Nero attended the first gun deal between the Mayans and the One-Niners, and after SAMCRO had departed the deal, believing that all was fine, Alvarez and his men killed the Niners present and stole the weapons. Alvarez apologies to Nero, and knew that Nero was too close to the Sons to get involved in the war, due to Nero's relationship with Gemma Teller Morrow. Alvarez proposed that Nero's second-in-command, Fiasco be given leadership over the gang and attend a meeting between the Mayans and the Triads. Nero later attended the meeting himself.

Season 7[]

In Season 7, tensions were extremely high between all gangs, with all sides expecting war. Nero Padilla had closely-affiliated himself with the Mayans and Lin Triad as a potential peace-keeper and middle-man between the Mayans and Triads, with the Sons of Anarchy. Upon Jax Teller's release from prison, he immediately had Nero set a meeting between the Mayans, SAMCRO, and the Lin Triads. At the meeting, Jax apologized for causing the tensions between the gangs, and proposed that he establish a direct weapons deal between the IRA, Mayans, and Triads, without a middle-man. Marcus and the new Stockton President Oscar El Oso Ramos, agreed to the new deal, and attended a party at SAMCRO's new porn studio, Redwoody Productions. Ramos was introduced to Charles Barosky by Padilla, in order for the Mayans to be able to use the Stockton ports. Ramos and Barosky did not get along well, but at Nero's insistence, the deal was made, and the Mayans began storing the guns stolen from the One-Niners in a warehouse at the port. The guns were later unknowingly stolen by SAMCRO, attempting to remove a potential rebellion in the One-Niners. The Mayans and Nero were then pointed to the One-Niner traitors, and gunned them down. The Triads later learned that SAMCRO had been behind the slaughter of all Triad members present at the first IRA-Chinese gun deal, and bombed the Sons at their new clubhouse, killed Orlin West, and massacred everyone present at Diosa Norte.

Mayans MC[]

Season 1[]

The Mayans continue to have a strong alliance with the Galindo Cartel, the California charters, specifically, Santo Padre run drugs under the border to then distribute to other charters. A threat soon arises in the form of Los Olvidados, a rebel Mexican organisation dedicated to taking down the Galindo cartel. Miguel Galindo, the leader of the cartel must balance his relationship with the Mayans, his war with Los Olvidados, and his personal and private life.

The Galindo cartel eventually forms an alliance with Los Olvidados after Miguel is confronted by their leader, Luisa "Adelita" Espina. The groups come to an agreement as they agree to destroy all other cartels and forms of violence, as long as Miguel agrees to funnel his money to groups supported by Los Olvidados. This in turn, makes the Mayans and Los Olvidados allies also.

At the end of season one, Alvarez, the leader of the Mayans decides to leave the Mayans to join the Galindo cartel and work more closely with Luisa and Miguel.

Season 2[]

Before Alvarez left the Mayans, he made plans for the future of the club. He divided his power and created The Rey De Los Mayas (King of the Mayans) and bestowed this title upon three Mayan Presidents, his cousin, Obispo "Bishop" Losa of Santo Padre, Canche of Yuma and Oscar "El Oso" Ramos of Stockton.

During season two, Santo Padre get in to a war with a rival motorcycle club, Vatos Malditos Motorcycle Club, after they begin trafficking and selling drugs on their turf. The clubs exchange blows and Santo Padre are eventually able to wipe out most of their organisation on the US side.

A lucrative business presents itself for the Mayans when the Sons of Anarchy want to enter in to a new gun running deal with the IRA and the Vatos Malditos. This is where the rest of the club learn about Santo Padre's altercation with the VM. After some quarrelling and decision making, the Sons, Mayans and VM are able to strike a deal; or so it seems.

After the Sons and the VM leave, Santo Padre hang around at the meet location, and are ambushed by the VM, Santo Padre member, Michael "Riz" Ariza is shot and badly wounded by the VM.

After the Mayans regroup, this throws the deal with the Sons in to jeproady. Santo Padre is understandably furious and want to wipe out the VM, not caring for the deal with the Sons. Canche and Ramos attempt to reason with Bishop and Santo Padre, but it is hard to get through to them, especially seeing as Riz eventually succumbs to his injuries and Santo Padre want revenge.

An agreement is seemingly eventually reached as Santo Padre meet with El Palo, President of the VM. The other Kings seem pleased with Bishop's seemingly selfless decision to go through with the deal, despite the loss of a member.

Later that night, Santo Padre patch in their Prospect, Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes. then go to war, and wipe out the VM, they had played the other charters and killed the deal with the other clubs.

Season 3[]

Tensions run high between Santo Padre and the other charters. A recent border lockdown has occurred and Santo Padre are unable to get the Galindo drugs to the other charters, a lot of shipments are being seized and the other charters are starving. Canche and Ramos, furious about the recent happenings with the VM deal and now the lockdown, begin to demand higher cuts from Santo Padre. A furious Bishop responds by cutting off all shipments to the other charters, starving them out completely.

The Tucson charter ally with Santo Padre and the two charters scheme to murder Canche and Ramos, leaving Bishop as the remaining Mayan King. A plan devised by new Santo Padre blood, EZ.

The Mayans Civil War begins, and after many plans and attempts, Santo Padre are successful in murdering Ramos and making an attempt on Canche's life. Believing him dead, the two charters celebrate their victory. In the meantime, Canche, having survived the explosive attempt on his life, regroups with the other charters and they storm the Santo Padre clubhouse, taking the fight to their front door.

Season 4[]

The charters continue their assault on Santo Padre, the clubs battle from late in the night in to the early hours in the morning, both sides suffering casualties. Santo Padre, led by EZ, eventually surrender. As Canche prepares to execute the members one by one, Alvarez suddenly arrives to end the war, he tears in to his brothers, specifically Canche and Bishop for starting this civil war, saying the Mayans is his club and they are attempting to destroy it.

Months later, we see that Alvarez has left the Galindo cartel and reassumed position as the President of Santo Padre, Miguel has also fled the country after being indicted by the FBI. Tensions still run extremely high between the charters, and there is much to be done in terms of repairing the relationship between Santo Padre and the other charters.

The clubs hold a memorial day for the fallen in an attempt to repair the many fractures in the club. Diaz, President of Oakland and founder of the Mayans alongside Alvarez, sits down with him in an attempt to persuade him to dissolve the Santo Padre charter, claiming that as along as they are around, peace within the club is impossible.

On the other side of California, in Oakland, the Sons of Anarchy have arrived at the Oakland clubhouse, they exit their vehicle and begin shooting in to the crowd.

Rattled by the attack of the Sons, the charters band together, believing a war to be inevitable. Some hot-headed Mayans, led by EZ, assault UC Davis, and attempt to kill Les Packer, the inactive SAMDINO President who is undergoing chemotherapy. Their mission is a failure, and all they have done is make tensions worse. The club decide on taking the war to SAMDINO and Alvarez reluctantly agrees, and sends the charters to wage war on the SAMDINO clubhouse, which they do, killing almost every SAMDINO Son. Canche is also lost in the battle, presumably killed by a Son.

Alvarez desperately attempts to keep the peace, being a different man to who he used to be, he is tired of all the fighting and doesn't want anymore bloodshed. He meets Alexander "Tig" Trager, Vice President of SAMCRO. Tig explains the reason for the war but Alvarez attempts to plead ignorance to the cause, a dead Son supposedly found on Mayan property. Alvarez assures Tig that he wants the war to end, but if it doesn't, the two long time friends will no longer meet on neutral terms.

Alvarez returns to Santo Padre, explaining to his brothers that Tig has agreed on peace, and the war must end, both clubs have suffered enough. EZ, now Vice President, speaks up, he demands that the Sons surrender but Alvarez explains that isn't the deal.

Taking matters in to his own hands, EZ calls for a killswitch, a Mayan bylaw to remove the current President if all other members of the charter agree. The vote passes unanimously and EZ dethrones Alvarez, making himself the President of Santo Padre. He vows to bring the Mayans to new heights and crush the Sons of Anarchy, as well as anyone else that stands in his way. He also wants to unite all Californian charters. They were previously separated by Northern and Southern California bottom rockers respectively, we see in the trailer for season five, that EZ was successful in making this happen.

Season 5[]

By season five, the peace between the Sons and the Mayans is quickly fading away. SAMDINO is locked in a battle with Southern Californian charters as Mayans look to expand their territory. The Northern charters are attempting to keep peace however, having their own treaty with SAMCRO whilst sending brothers down to the South to try and keep them afloat, they appear to be very on the fence about what to do during the war.

The majority of Southern Californian charters are eventually wiped out, leaving only Santo Padre. The Sons continue to close in as Santo Padre scramble to make new alliances and strengthen themselves to defend against SAMDINO. They are eventually successful in partnering with Gretton's Crew, the Broken Saints Motorcycle Club and Storm 88 as part of a drug pipeline to make them richer than they could have ever imagined. Santo Padre are also able to convince the Grim Bastards to break their long time peace treaty with the Sons after manipulating them and faking some hostility. Diaz is also killed by a vengeful Guero of Santo Padre.

Under EZ's lead, Santo Padre take the war to SAMDINO and are successful in wiping them all out, killing Isaac Packer in the process. This leaves the Mayans with immense power in Southern California with nothing to stop them. The future for the club appears bright, EZ has done the unthinkable and bought the Mayans to new heights. Their victory is however, short lived. EZ is discovered to have previously been an informant and is murdered by Santo Padre, hours later the clubhouse is raided by the ATF and the remainder of Santo Padre are wiped out; completely eliminating the Mayans in Southern California.

Much like the majority of outlaw motorcycle clubs, the Mayans wear dark blue denim or leather kutte decorated with a variety of insignia and flashes. Flashes denoting club ranks are written in Spanish, rather than English.

Members may also wear a variety of decorative flashes and patches on their kutte, the majority being worn at the top of the kutte, but some select flashes may be work at the bottom. A complete and detailed list of all available flashes can be seen below.

Trivia[]

  • They are in part loosely based on the real-life Mongols MC.
    • The Mongols were also founded by Mexican-American bikers, however the Mongols, especially outside of the West Coast, are known to have numerous members of other races and ethnicities as well; due to the club expanding into other states and other countries. However, the Mayans are a much smaller club and membership appears to be exclusively Hispanic and Latino.
    • Members will often times refer to themselves as the "nation" collectively.
    • The first SOA-Mayans war being fought over the "California" bottom rocker and supremacy in said state when the Mayans expanded is inspired by how the conflict between the real-life Hells Angels and Mongols allegedly started.
  • The Oakland charter initially had more direct control over the other Mayan charters, due to being a smaller club compared to the Sons of Anarchy. According to Kurt Sutter in the behind-the-scenes content for Season 1 (Mayans MC); "the Mayans run like a traditional organized crime family, with Alvarez as the boss and the other charter presidents as his capos".
    • However, before Alvarez walked away from the club, he decided that instead of one boss like before there will be leading committee and he divided his former power to three shot callers who formed leading the leading committee of the Mayans MC known as Rey De Los Mayas also knows as the Three Kings; Bishop, Ramos, and Canche, as seen in "Xbalanque".
  • Like in the Rockstar Games title "Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned", a civil war breaks out within the Lost MC.
  • Not only do the Mayans have influence among other motorcycle clubs; such as Calaveras, but also Hispanic street gangs including the Byz Lats and the Hispanic prison population due to their heroin pipeline.
  • The Mayans meeting room is referred to as a "temple" or “templo”, instead of being traditionally called a "chapel" or "church", as temples were religious infrastructures in the Maya civilization.
  • The title page of the Mayans bylaws displays a photo of a young Marcus Alvarez posing with an unknown Mayan (presumably Diaz); which is actually a personal photo of Emilio Rivera's with his younger brother, whom was intended to appear onscreen with Rivera. https://www.instagram.com/p/CdJ7CeLJLh9/ Unfortunately, he passed away before Season 1 finished filming.
