"AK-51" is the sixth episode of the first season of the FX original series Sons of Anarchy, and the series' sixth episode overall.

Synopsis[]

With Clay in custody Jax has to step up as Piney's old friend turns out to be a problem for the MC.

Plot[]

As a favor to his old war buddy Nate Meineke, Piney sells a number of AK-47 assault rifles to his right-wing Militia. He heads out to the woods with Jax to meet Meineke and his son, Russell Meineke. After briefly testing the weapons out on targets, Nate and Russell say that they will buy the guns. However, they initially try to short Jax $5,000 before Piney insists that they pay the agreed-upon $10,000.

Meanwhile, Gemma and Clay are trying to have sex but clearly struggling due to their age. After Clay complains, Gemma storms off into the bathroom. Later that day at Teller-Morrow Automotive, Gemma reassures him that they are fine, and it was just a strange morning. Half-Sack asks Gemma for a phone number, but at that same time Juice returns from Indian Hills with the rest of the AK-47's, and Cherry, in his truck. Clay tells Juice off for bringing Cherry to town, as he doesn't want a woman that he recently slept with near his wife. However, Juice and Cherry tell him that she only wants to see Half-Sack. Gemma sees this transpire and immediately questions Half-Sack about Cherry's identity. Based on Clay's angry reaction outside, Gemma asks Half-Sack if Clay had sex with Cherry, which Half-Sack denies any knowledge of. Gemma tells him to get out, and she starts to cry.

Stahl

Agent Stahl arrives in Charming to arrest Clay

Nate, Russell, and other masked men then use the purchased AK-47's to ambush a prison convoy and free one of their members. A shoot-out ensues and a police officer and two innocent bystanders are killed. While fleeing, Meineke drops his cell phone at the scene. Back at the clubhouse, the Sons are discussing their problems with continuing their gun business with the IRA. Chibs says that McKeavey was very clear in that the Irish need $200,000 up front within the week, or they will be forced to find new buyers. In the middle of this meeting, ATF Agent June Stahl and other law enforcement arrive outside and arrest Clay. Agent Stahl informs them of the shootout that took place earlier that morning and says that while no charges have been placed against Clay yet, they need to ask about his relationship to Nate Meineke, whose cell phone listed Teller-Morrow Automotive as the last call.

At the Charming Police Station, Stahl interrogates Clay about her suspicions that SAMCRO supplied the guns used in the murders and will soon have a warrant to search the SOA clubhouse and the Teller-Morrow garage. Agent Kohn introduces himself, making sure to omit the reason why he is in Charming, and offers Stahl some of the photos that he has been taking of the Sons of Anarchy, including the shootout with Mayans in Indian Hills, Nevada in "Patch Over." At the same time, Deputy Chief Hale points out that Piney, a founding elder of SOA, was in the same platoon as Nate Meineke and Frank Cison - the father of the man freed from the prison transport - in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, at a porn studio, Gemma confides in Luann Delaney about the situation regarding Cherry: "The rules got broken. What happens on a run stays on a run. It does not show up and slap me in the goddamn face. That does not happen to me!" Luann not only tries to console Gemma, but recommends that she have her doctor write a prescription for Estrotol Solution 15 - a medicine for menopause. Elsewhere, Deputy Trammel and Jax discuss the prior shootout. Jax admits that it was their AK-47's involved in the shootout; Trammel says that he knew the officer that was killed for fifteen years and Jax apologizes. Nevertheless, the Sons need him to look into the evidence against Clay. Trammel resists at first, threatening to end his relationship with SAMCRO. Jax reminds him that he already knows all about the Club, and they know all about him.

Later, Meineke contacts Piney again and sets up a meeting at their survivalist hideout in the woods. The Sons agree that they will have to kill the militia to stop them from informing on SAMCRO if they are apprehended. The meeting is set up for the following day. In the meantime, SAMCRO has a more immediate problem. With a search of their property imminent, the Sons must get the remaining guns to the One-Niners as soon as possible, without the ATF agents noticing. Although there is not a clear plan yet, Jax tells Bobby to inform Laroy that he will have his guns by the end of the day, and to collect the rest of the payment.

Meanwhile, Gemma picks up the menopause medicine that Luann recommended for her. While exiting the pharmacy, she sees Cherry and in a fit of rage, takes a teenager's skateboard and hits Cherry in the face with it, resulting in Gemma being arrested and brought into the same jail where Clay is being interrogated. Spotting Gemma, Clay confronts her and the two have an argument in the middle of the police station.

At the clubhouse, Jax is reading his father's manuscript on the roof and spots a septic truck on the garage forecourt which seems to give him an urgent idea. Downstairs, he and the other Club members begin preparing to hide the guns inside of the septic truck so as to avoid the ATF finding them in the search warrant. In the middle of this, however, Bobby returns to inform Jax that Laroy no longer wants to buy the guns, likely due to the attention brought by the prison transport escape. Inside St. Thomas, Tara notices that Kohn is inside an incubation chamber with Abel. Tara sternly reminds him that the room is for medical personnel and family only, but Kohn disregards this and says "It still hurts me... Be at SAMCRO in 45 minutes if you want to see his future. And yours too, maybe."

ATF

ATF raids the club

Federal agents then act on the warrant for the SAMCRO clubhouse and the Teller-Morrow garage, detaining everyone and ransacking the buildings. Tara can be seen stopping to watch the search unfold from the street for a few moments before driving away. Agent Kohn is inside Jax's room within the clubhouse and examines everything for a few moments before taking a picture and destroying the rest of the room. Later that night, Chibs, Half-Sack, and Juice go to retrieve the guns out of the septic truck.

At the police station, Agent Stahl shows Deputy Hale one of the oil barrels that the Sons use to transport their guns from Dungloe, Ireland, which she correctly identifies as Real IRA territory. She tells Hale that she is looking to bring in Homeland Security and the Treasury Department to further investigate if the Sons of Anarchy are dealing guns with a known terrorist organization. When Hale asks if she has briefed Agent Kohn on this, she discloses that when she called his ATF supervisor in Chicago that they were under the impression that Kohn was on vacation in Oregon, not in Charming on a case. As she leaves, she says that Clay is free to go. Before leaving, Clay talks to Gemma who refuses to have her bail posted. He apologizes and tries to stay with her in the cell. Gemma admits that she is going through menopause, which they both acknowledge as a sign that things are changing. Clay says his love for Gemma doesn't change, but she insists that he give her time alone and to pick her up in the morning. At St. Thomas, Cherry apologizes to Half-Sack and explains that she came to Charming for him, not Clay. Although he initially says that they cannot be together because of what happened with Clay and Gemma, they kiss.

The following morning, Jax, Piney and Opie set out to meet Nate in Woodbridge Forrest. Meineke tells them that he and his men are fleeing to Mexico and wants to buy more guns from SAMCRO. The Sons sell them bags of grain, supposedly containing the rifles but actually filled with explosives. Piney offers that they cut open a bag and have a look, but in a vow of trust Nate responds that there is no need, and they load the bags into their trucks. Once the deal is done, Piney hugs Nate one last time. As they drive away, Opie detonates the bombs, presumably killing all of the Militia.

Immediately after, Jax goes to St. Thomas where he runs into Tara. They briefly discuss the fact that an ATF agent has been harassing the Club and following Jax, and Tara asks if he can drive her home once her shift ends. When they leave, Kohn can be seen in the car directly behind them. At the police station, Clay picks up Gemma where they see Cherry walking towards them. Cherry apologizes to Gemma and confesses that she wants the type of relationship that Clay and Gemma have, but between her and Half-Sack. Gemma threatens her to ensure she does not bother Clay anymore, before saying that her broken nose will heal nicely and leaving with Clay.

Notable Quotes[]

John Teller: The older I get, the more I realize that age doesn't bring wisdom. It only brings weary. I'm not any smarter than I was 30 years ago. I've just grown too tired to juggle the lies and hide the fears. Self-awareness doesn't reveal my indiscretions; exhaustion does.

Clay: What the hell did you do?!
Gemma: Same thing you did: nailed some little tart from Nevada!
Clay: Like I don't have enough shit oozing out of my ears. You gotta go and do this.
Gemma: You should've thought of that before your dick went on a cheerleader hunt.
Clay: Hey! I didn't tell her to come here.
Gemma: But she's here!
Clay: Well, it's not my fault!
Gemma: And it's not my pussy.
Stahl: And that's why I'm single.

Gemma: When you were our paperboy, you used to have that same goofy haircut.
Hale: Yeah. That was a long time ago.

Gemma: I'm going through menopause, Clay. You know what that means?
Clay: Means things are changing.

Gemma: You so much as flash a pretty grin at him - I will jam my fist so far up your bony ass, your cup size will double.
Cherry: Is that how your rack got to be that size?

Church Meetings[]

Clay: Who did McKeavy see up north?
Chibs: Few gun brokers, some Irish expats and fat, black hookers.
Jax: Where is he now?
Chibs: He's greasing the palms of port authority contacts. Alright, we got a week, maybe 10 days. Then he wants his 200k.
Clay: We're working on it.
Chibs: Clay, he made it very clear. We gotta have the money up front for the IRA to keep 'em flush. Otherwise, he'll sell to the Russians, and we lose the Irish pipeline to our guns.
Bobby: Laroy's gonna take the 3 dozen AK's off our hands.
Clay: Yeah. At a deep discount.
Jax: Well, it's either that or spend a month finding a better buyer. At least this way, he puts 50 grand in our pockets now. Plus the 10 I got this morning and the Chinese money. Gets us more than half-way there.
